Affectionately known by all who love him as Griz (and currently performing under that pseudonym), Chris Grunwald is a Philadelphia born artist who has been delivering the goods for more than a decade. Constantly adding to his creative resume, he continues to explore different musical avenues both as a solo performer and with several Philly based bands. Griz' rustic exterior is embedded with thoughtful honesty and raw affection. His repertoire is a unique collection of songs crafted with an untamed scrutiny of the human experience that leaves an audience energized and ready to dance. This rocking vibe sets Griz apart from his mates in the local folk scene.When Griz is playing with his full band, it is the fleshed out manifestation of his songwriting. For over a decade, native Philadelphian Griz has been sowing the seeds of his musical talents. The fruits of these labors are now revealed with the release of his new album, The Secret in the Garden. Recorded and produced at The Record Lounge with Andrew Lipke, Griz says "the thirteen song anthology has something for everyone. The styles range from gentle folk to reggae to genuine rock and roll, representing the various influences I have drawn from over the years." Griz rustic exterior is embedded with thoughtful honesty and raw affection; his repertoire is a unique collection of songs crafted with an untamed scrutiny of the human experience. "One of the challenges we faced was maintaining cohesiveness while mixing so many different styles on one project. I feel we pulled it off by allowing the lyrical content to tie it together. The songs present recurring themes dealing with the struggles of relationships, growing gardens, and politics." says Griz. Although the subject matter can be dark and brooding, the music remains lighthearted, accessible and fresh, leaving listeners with a sense of hope and camaraderie. The title track muses about the problems of the world, yet still evokes images of dancing fairies and growth.If the company Griz keeps as a professional artist werent indication enough of his reputation as a beloved member of the "new folk" community, the guest performances on this album certainly speak volumes about his prowess as a songwriter. "Don't be scared. Play some reggae."Griz's Soul Shakedown Party is a collection of Philadelphia's favorite musicians honoring the music of Bob Marley and other great Reggae artists. Musicians who have played in this island super group include Rick Reinhart and James Faber of Golden Phi, Mike Caroto and Dean Gorfti formerly of StillWillis, Adam Flicker formerly of The Brakes, Steve Ciannevei of The Griz Band, and drummers Freddie Berman and Ras Michael who both have played in innumerable Philly projects.An evening with The Soul Shakedown Party features accurate energetic renditions of much of Bob Marley's catalog of inspiring tunes as well as other reggae favorites such as Toots and The Maytals, Sublime, The Police, Peter Tosh and The Specials. Expect some surprising reggae versions of popular tunes from other genres of music along with some of Chris's original songs as well. The Soul Shakedown Party is guaranteed to get the audience dancing at neighborhood bars, big clubs, outdoor events and private parties.
